Background of the study
Student assessment is a vital component of the educational process, enabling teachers to evaluate student learning, identify strengths and weaknesses, and adjust teaching strategies accordingly. Traditionally, offline assessment methods, such as paper-based tests and oral exams, have been the primary tools for evaluating student performance. However, with the rise of technology in education, online assessment methods, including digital quizzes, online exams, and automated grading systems, have become increasingly popular (Adegoke & Ibrahim, 2023). These online methods offer several advantages, such as real-time feedback, reduced administrative workload, and the ability to reach a wider range of students.

In Makurdi Local Government Area, secondary schools are beginning to explore both online and offline assessment methods. However, there is limited research on the comparative effectiveness of these methods in terms of student performance, accuracy, and accessibility. This study will compare online and offline student assessment methods in Makurdi secondary schools.

Statement of the problem
The shift from offline to online assessment methods presents challenges, including issues of internet accessibility, digital literacy, and concerns about the fairness and reliability of online assessments. This study seeks to investigate whether online assessment methods provide more accurate and timely evaluations of student performance compared to offline methods or if offline assessments are still more effective in certain contexts.

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare the effectiveness of online and offline student assessment methods in terms of student performance in Makurdi secondary schools.

  2. To assess the advantages and challenges of online versus offline student assessments in Makurdi secondary schools.

  3. To explore the impact of online and offline assessment methods on student engagement and academic success.

Research questions

  1. How do online student assessment methods compare to offline assessment methods in terms of student performance in Makurdi secondary schools?

  2. What are the advantages and challenges of using online versus offline student assessment methods in Makurdi secondary schools?

  3. How do online and offline student assessment methods affect student engagement and academic success?

Significance of the study
This study will provide important insights into the strengths and weaknesses of online and offline assessment methods, helping educators and school administrators make informed decisions about which method to adopt based on their students' needs and available resources.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to secondary schools in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, and focuses on comparing online and offline student assessment methods. The study does not extend to primary education or schools outside of this region.
